The Difference between Confidence and Narcissism

You might be enamored with their personality. They act confident and self- assured. Even their body language can exude a ‘smooth operator’ swagger. They are friendly, charismatic, charming, and in many ways alluring.

Are they confident or are they a narcissist?

If they have emotional intelligence, they will be able to ‘read’ your body language. This skill is an advantage as they can vibe in sync with you, giving you the impression that you may have met a soul partner or your person. You feel like you are on the same page!

If you get into an interpersonal or intimate relationship and they are a narcissist, instead of a confident person, you will soon see the flip side of their personality. The self- absorption is the underbelly of the ‘confident’ facade that lays beneath the veneer of the confident persona. Their lack of inner security and fragile self- esteem leaks out through projections and defense mechanisms, with a bottomless pit of need for validation.

You will begin to be berated for your lack of attention, adoration and adulation. This is because there is never enough praise for the narcissist. Because their self- esteem is extremely fragile, and dependent on your supply of attention, their need for positive…
